About Nadathur Family Tree
|Srimathe Vastya Varada Mahadesikaya Nama:|
NATHA MUNI, RAMANUJA MUNI & NADATHUR AZHWAN: Sri Sudarshana Suri aka Nadathur Azhwan (1049-1155 CE) was the son of Sri Mahadayadeesar who established Nadathur Agraharam or Hamlet. The Nadathur Family Tree (genealogy) starts from Sri Nadathur Azhwan as Genaration 1 (Gen 1). Sri Nadathur Azhwan was the fourth-generation descendant of Sri Natha Muni's (824-924 CE) sister's son Melaiagath Azhwan and his mother Kamalamba was the younger sister of the great Sri Vaishnava Acharya Sri Ramanujachariyar (1017-1137 CE). Sri Ramanuja gave his “Sri Bhashya Simhasanam” (a reverential tittle for sustaining Vedic Knowledge imparted by Sri Ramanujacharya) to Sri Nadathur Azhwan besides Sri Kidambi Achan, Sri Mudali Andan and Sri Thirukurugai Piran Pillan. Sri Nadathur Azhwan " installed Sri Ramanujar Archa Murthy (Idol for worship) at Kanchipuram Sri Varadarajar temple. Sri Vatsya Varadaguru (1165-1275 CE) popularly known as Sri Nadathur Ammal was the grandson of Sri Nadathur Azhwan. Nadam in Sanskrit means lotus - refers to the lotus feet of the Lord Sriman Narayana; athar means those who consume. "Nada~thar" therefore refers to those who breath and live on the thoughts and bliss of the lotus feet of Sriman Narayana ("unnum soru parugum neer thinnum vetrilai ellam Kannan enru irupaar" - உண்ணும் சோறு பருகுநீர் தின்னும் வெற்றிலை எல்லாம் கண்ணன் என்று வாழ்க்கை நடத்துபவர்). The place or village where they lived was called Nada~thur (Nadathur). Due to Nadathur Sri Varadacharyar's deepest devotion and motherly affection in serving the Lord Sri Varadaraja of Kanchipuram, the Lord Himself fondly called him as "Amma" (mother), and hence came the name"Nadathur Ammal". Ammal is the most celebrated Achraya of Sri Ramanuja Sidhantha. A comprehensive list of Ammal's works are compiled and presented here. NADATHUR AMMAL & SWAMI SRI DESIKAN: Ammal used to have discourses on Sri Bhashyam (commentary by Sri Ramanujar on Veda Vyasar's Brahma Sutra) at Kachivayththan mandapam behind Sri Varadarajar sannidhi (eastern side) in Kanchipuram. Sri Nadadthur Ammal's Sri Bhashya kalakshepa goshti is painted and depicted on the roof of Kachivayththan mandapam showing Nadathur Ammal blessing five-year-old Swami bala-Desikan accompanied by his maternal uncle Kidambi Appular, a disciple of Nadathur Ammal. Later on Swami Sri Vedanta Desikan (1268-1379 CE) imparted Sri Nadathur Ammal's Sri Bhashyam lectures (known as Srutaprakashika) to his disciples over thirty times when he was in exile at Sathyakalam near Karnataka. Srutaprakashika is considered to be the most detailed and authentic work on Sri Bhashyam of Sri Ramanujacharya and studied as one of the four pillars of knowledge on Sri Vaishnavism (Grantha-Chatushtayam). NADATHUR AMMAL & SRI PARAKALA AND AHOBILA MUTTS: Nadathur Ammal was the grand preceptor of Swami Sri Vedanta Desikan. Swami Desikan's foremost disciple (besides his own son Sri Kumara Varadachariar, 1315-1417 CE), HH Sri Bramhatantra Swatanthra Mahadesikan (1286-1386 CE) was the founder of Sri Parakala Mutt in 1359 CE at Thooppul near Kanchipuram, Tamilnadu. HH was the preceptor of Ammal's great grandson Ghatikashatam Sri Varadavishnu Mahadesikan. Sri Varadavishnu Mahadesikan's son Sri Varadarya Mahadesikan popularly known as Ghatikashatam Chinna Ammal (~1325-1430 CE, Gen 7) was the preceptor of HH Sri Adivan Satakopa Yatheendra Mahadesikan (1379-1458 CE) who founded Sri Ahobilam Mutt in 1398 CE at Ahobialm in Andrapradesh. • Giyarpuram(Pazhyaseevarm) Nadathur Ammal
  • The earliest name (moola purusha) for Giyarpuram-Nadathur-Ammal clan starts from Sri Nadathur Azhwan (Gen 1). Like "Nadathur" and "Ammal", "Giyarpuram" became another Family Name when Giyarpuram (historically known as Vinnapuram > Sripuram > Thirumalirunsolai > Thirubhuvana Veera Chathurvedi Mangalam > Seeyavaram, Seeyapuram (denoting Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Temple area) > Srivaram > Seevaram > (10th century archaeological names) emerged near Kanchipuram during the 17th century (at this time Giyarpuram was also referred to as "Uththanga Chozha Chathurvedi Mangalam"). Now the village is known as "Pazhyaseevarm" signifying various names and connections associated with the event-full history. We are yet to ascertain the exact location of the first "Nadathur" agraharam established by Sri Mahadayadeesar (~950 CE) however, the available information suggest that it may have been Pazhayaseevaram due to: (1) a recent (2002 CE) discovery of a 10th century (922 CE) Sri Vaikuntanatha Perumal Temple at Pazhayaseevaram by HH Sri Rangaramanuja Mahadesikan of Srimad Srirangam Andavan Ashramam (Sri Mushnam Andavan) at a Government of India Archaeological Site(ASI), (2) legendary connections between Kanchipuram and Pazhayaseevaram (Lord Sri Vardharaja Swamy of Kanchipuram visits Pazhayaseevaram temple every year during Parvettai Utsavam and the primordial deity of Sri Varadaraja temple was either recovered or remade from Pazhayaseevaram during invasions (15-18th Century), (3) a 1948 CE publication "Seevaram Sri Nadathur Ammal Vamsavalli" documenting the first 26 Generations, and this clan still uses Nadathur Ammal (N.A.) and Geeyerpuram Nadathur (G.N.) as their family names, and (4) Geeyerpuram Nadadur Ammal descendent Sri Krishnaswamy (Gen 25) was instrumental in the construction of Sri Varadarajar and Sri Nadathur Ammal temple at Broadway street (currently Prakasam street), Chennai and presently held under the hereditary trusteeship of N.A. Srivatsan (Gen 28). Beginning 17th century, Geeyerpuram (Seevaram) Nadathur families (Gen 24) migrated to Royalaseema, Saidapet, Mylapore, Triplicane, and Broadway. G.N. Thirumalachar (Gen 24) moved to Bobili Samasthanam (zamin) in Andhra Pradesh as a court counselor and settled in Kanchipuram and Triplicane. Probably he and N.A. Krishnaswamy (Gen 25) were instrumental in the construction of Sri Varadarajar and Sri Nadathur Ammal temple at Broadway street (currently Prakasam street), Chennai and presently held under the hereditary trusteeship of N.A. Sridharan (Gen 27). G.N. Singarachar (Gen 24) and G.N. Sundaravaradachar (Gen 24) , Deputy Collector Rayalaseema, settled in Saidapet (1854), Brahmin Street (Jagan Nivas, Varada Nivas N.A.N and G.N.A Houses). His son G.N. Rangaswami Ayyangar "GNR" (Gen 25) settled in Coimbatore/T.Nagar. He was the Principal, Agricultural college Coimbatore awarded the title of Rao Bahadur in 1935. He and his elder brother N.A. Vedanthachar were the recipients of the Coronation Medal in 1906 and 1937 respectively. G.N.
